Some scaring facts have been reported to me after my articles about Gen Y – They and Gen Y – We. In very first moment these facts made me laughed. Yes, yestarday I chose to laugh instead of being scared. The report says about mainly repeated and circulating in the air Gen X’s (my age generation) opinions about Gen Y. I opted to laugh otherwise I wouldn’t have been able to believe that such ridiculous opinions can be made by people who control someone else career or by ones who are supervisors of people’s professional development. By present managers. I am afraid I shouldn’t post this article on Twitter because nobody is gonna believe that all I am going to publicise here below about Gen X is nothing but true.
We have been living in XXI century. Airplanes fly. Fax machines are not used (almost) anymore due to wireless technology. The man jumped from the spaceship to reach the Earth. We dictate e-mails by voice and they turn into written text. 80% of young population use smartphones. Facebook earned about $ 9 bln on various world’s companies ads last year. The greatest companies have been useing blogs as its most powerful marketing tool for 4-5 years at least. There are content marketing and inbound marketing. SEOs have became SEMs in major numbers of agile and intelligent companies. Companies get now another channel (FB, Twitter) to reach out to shareholders apart from their websites. There has been a process named Digital Darwinism occurring today. 4P marketing doesn’t work anymore prior to 5P marketing. Modern marketing requires knowledge from various areas: psychology, neuromarketing, neurology, technology of modern digital items, technology of changing so fast various social media platforms; all these things influent on marketing! How your company goes depends on how you face these changes. Etc, etc. etc.
Each company which wants to be first and the best one have been redirected its marketing to (and through) social media for more then 7 years. Why? Gosh, if I am going to dedicate this article to explain „why” it would be like a try to explain the reason (for example) why when I tape buttons on my laptop, letters appear on the screen.
The point is that most of the Gen X managers simply don’t get it. Yes. When I am reading the article in Forbes „The Best workers are The Least Engaged„ I wonder how these workers can be even consider as the best ones? What kind of HR misconstuction happens in the 48% of todays companies? Oh yes, there has been a crisis sourrunding the world. Is this so due to these companies’ mentality? I really think it is. Less than average people run 48% of world’s companies.
Coming back to present manager’s opinions about the Gen Y. They contempt the Gen Y calling these young people stupid, worthless, empty, superficial, without any deep interests or hobbies. These managers or even universities social faculty representatives (sic!) believe that the Gen Y is so cold as human beings that they do not need any physical contact with other people due to the ‚fact’ they prefer a virtual one. They say that Gen Y get stuck to the ‚stupid’ FB, ‚stupid’ Pinterest, Tumblr, YouTube, Vimeo, SlideShare, etc, because in this way they can share their stupid modern cloths or digital items or holiday’s photos. They say the Gen Y has nothing in hands and in minds but … their smartphones. Yes, amazing …
I have a daughter. She is about to finish her Law Studies. She has been working at 3 various jobs to make herself financially independent and to pay her studies since 2010. She has no time for any useless time-consuming things. She is busy all the day (and sometimes night due to her night shifts at work). She studies, works and live abroad. She left our home and her friends she grown up with when she was 18. All she can do to stay in touch with reality of running world is her smartphone and tablet. She uses them to read articles, to read e-books, to answers e-mails, to check her University schedule or news, to see what is going with her friends, to listen to BBC, CNN, to read The Times reports, The Economist news – on line. She is not able to devote herself to anything else but her studies and 3 job’s duties. Yes, she lives with her smartphone in her hand. Yes, she does.
I am surrounded by the Gen Y representatives and I work with them and for them. I do respect them a lot and support them at their efforts to achieve their goals. Therefore, I suppose so, each time I give a lecture for students or I run a workshop I receive standing ovation. Is this rude or not modest enough to claim such an experience? I don’t think so, because I deeply believe when you do what you love, when there is a great passion and respect for people you work for and with, you will be recognised as someone who is absolutely true and you will be followed, trusted and respected.
Last year I wrote a book „Recruitments in Poland – how not to become a monkey while looking for a job” which I dedicated to the Gen Y thanking these young people for not being lazy, scared, easy-takers, not being like their parents were (and still are). Thanking them for they are brave and they dare to be someone they dream about to be. Thanking them to be honest to themselves at first.
The Gen Y clients are 70% of my clients in general. They have been awoken much, much earlier than anybody else of my generation. Awoken according to what really matters for them, to be honest to themselves in each process of acting and how essential is to follow (and fight for) all what is their passion and future professional goals.
Tomorrow I will be interviewed by The German Television due to a discussion in Centre Europe media right to differences and misunderstandings between these two generations. I know I will be asked about the main conflict between the X and Y Generation in Poland. I know it has been occurring not only in Poland, but all over the world as well. I am going to say:
I shouldn’t laugh about the fact that the Gen X is so arrogant and ignorant about the Gen Y values and intellectual preferences. I should be scared because it simply means that the major part of our economic world lays today in hands and minds of people who yet don’t recognise how fast is the nowadays’ world changing and they are too lazy to make an effort to overcome their ignorance. Are they too lazy or too stupid? Do they really think that their generation X is immortal?
Each CEO should check out what is his manager’s opinion or belief about Gen Y. If it is the same negative like I have mentioned above, he must know that he makes his managers earn money allowing them to drive his company straight to the lost and dark end of the present business world.
I always wonder if arrogance comes from ignorance or vice versa? What do you think?
